If the subs on the DVD’s didn’t suck so bad all the time it wouldn’t be so tempting to go and download the video with fansubs.

I don’t mean to rain on your parade because I lot of what you said makes some decent sense, however your part about how Japan doesn’t care what we do with their anime in the US is incorrect. Japan has pretty much invested the future of its anime industry in the US, thus the reason why US anime pirates do concern the Japanese, and their is much fail to be spread around between the business workings in both the US and Japan, but the bottom line is if the anime industry collaspses here in the states you better believe it’s not going to keep going there save for stupid kiddy anime that are produced solely to sell some cardgame or the pokemon-esque type of shows.

Very good post, The merchandise post is the one that I most closely agree with. I’ve probably bought more merchandise thanks to fansubs than thanks to my DVD collection. Just because of the volume of Anime that I can watch though fansubs.

After all arguments though:

I’d rather have Coleen Clinkenbeard, Caitlin Glass, Lucy “Hold On” Christian, Hillary Haas, Monica Rial, and Jamie Marchi tell me not to steal anime than Greg Ayers. Attractive women tend to do more good than oft-looking otaku.

Making the project actually worth what you would have to invest in it seems to be one of main things here, which is why there was that whole brouhaha with how Bandai Visual was charging an arm and leg for that stuff (though I’m not sure if that issue was also important north of the border). And the question is how to do that, considering all the factors involved. Which is why I think what GONZO is doing with their shows is a good start, but I do wonder what other companies will do with it. And that’s still one part of a complicated and annoying issue. I guess…

1) Not everybody buys MERCHANDISE outside of the usual DVD filled with anime.

2) That’s under 2% of the viewing public in and out of Japan; the reputation of the anime industry and the dedicated fanbase they cater to, not the reputation of the “Average Joes Who Walks Down The Street And Might Help You Out With Money.”

3) Greg Ayers needs to stop voicing weak male leads and defeatable losers before he can order everyone to put money back into the anime industry.

3b) Or has that point been reached? Are all of you hardcore anime fans “closet bullies” who had either been bullied or can’t do any real bullying IRL?
